Fat Burning Supplements: White Willow Bark:


Friday we discussed combining guarana and white willow bark to increase fat burning, but what is white willow bark?
White willow bark is nature's aspirin. Derived from a tree species native to Central and Southern Europe, and cultivated in North America, white willow bark contains salicin, which the body converts into salicylic acid. This produces the same effect as aspirin. In fact, aspirin was originally synthesized using white willow bark without any of the adverse results. (Due to tannins in white willow bark, it can make some people's stomachs upset. Also since it is very similar to aspirin chemically, you should not take it if you are allergic to aspirin. Studies have shown that when combined with guarana seed extract, as discussed in Friday's blog, and also citrus auantium, white willow bark increases the bodie's ability to utilize fatty acids while preserving lean muscle tissue.

Caffeine: A Fat Burning Supplement

Caffeine is one of the most effective weight loss supplements. It is a performance enhancer, and also accelerates the rate at which fat is broken down within the body. This helps burn a higher percentage of calories from fat during exercise. In addition to this, when your body uses fat while exercising, rather then glucose, your glucose levels remain stable. This makes you feel less hungry. Don't just head straight down to the local Starbuck's for a latte however; when it comes to caffeine, you must take the right kind, at the right time, in the right amounts, with the right blend. Caffeine in coffee is actually ineffective for fat burning, because the other ingredients in coffee interfere with its performance enhancing effects. The most effective form of caffeine for weight loss is and herb called guarana. Guarana comes from a tropical plant from the Amazon jungle. Guarana contains a compound nearly identical to caffeine, but is more effective for weight-loss. Unlike caffeine, which produces and energy surge with a sudden rush and quick drop-off, guarana is not readily water-soluble and therefore absorbed less quickly. Guarana's effects are released over a period of hours producing an energy boost that escalates more gradually.
Guarana is most effective in fat burning when combined with white willow bark. This combination naturally elevates energy expenditure (calorie burning) by interfering with prostaglandin production and inhibiting norepinephrine breakdown.
The most effective way to take guarana for weight loss is to ingest 5 mg of per pound of body weight 40 minutes prior to exercise. For best results take a supplement that combines guarana and white willow bark.

Biggest Loser: Jillian Michaels Nutrition

So, as promised yesterday, we will be reviewing how the three different oxidation metabolisms should eat according to Jillian Michael's new book, "Making the Cut". Please read yesterday's post if you need a definition of the oxidizers.
Slow Oxidizers - The ideal macronutrient ration for the slow oxidizer is 60% carbohydrates, 25% protein and 15% fat. When slow oxidizers are choosing proteins, they should opt for low fat options because high fat proteins will slow down the oxidation rate, which is bad for people who are already slow oxidizers. Although this group metabolizes carbs better then other groups, be cautious to choose complex carbs rather then simple ones that convert into sugar quickly in the blood stream. And finally for the 15% fat choices; slow oxidizers should follow a low-fat diet. Too much fat can make this type lethargic, anxious and irritable. Ideal fat choices are vegetables and nut oils.
Balanced Oxidizers - The ideal macronutrient ratio for balanced oxidizer is 40% carbohydrates, 30% Protein, and 30% fat. It is important for balanced oxidizers to get a good mix of different types of protein from high purine proteins to low. * Purines are natural substances already present in our bodies that aid in cellular regeneration. We all metabolize purines differently. It is crucial for balanced oxidizers to get both low and high purine proteins and that your diet consists of 30% protein all together. Ideal carbohydrates for a balanced oxidizer is a mix of fruits and vegetables. They should limit starchy carbs to no more then one serving per meal. Fats are 30%. Fat should not be excessive or limited with this type of body.
Fast Oxidizers - The ideal macronutrient ratio for the fast oxidizer is 30% carbohydrates, 40% protein, and 30% fat. The best proteins for fast oxidizers is high purine proteins. High purine proteins are found in fattier meats. This type performs the best on heavier, fattier proteins because it helps to slow down the oxidation rates. Fast oxidizers do best when they are also limiting carbohydrate intake. They should avoid simple carbs that convert into sugar quickly, and focus on complex carbs like whole grains. Fast oxidizers need to support their metabolism by sustaining 30% of their calorie allowance from natural oils and fats.

I cannot wait until season 8 of The Biggest Loser premiering September 15th! I love that show. In the interim I have picked up and completed Jillian Michael's new book, "Making The Cut." Although this book is primarily about overall training, I was impressed by a couple of nutritional concepts she introduced. I will be recapping them in the following blogs.
The first concept I would like to touch upon, is "eating for your metabolic type". Instinctively, I have always believed this idea because my husband can eat anything under the sun and not gain an ounce...while I do not have the same luck; if I eat even one piece of pizza, I swear I gain 5 pounds and wake up bloated....annoying! Here is a description of the three metabolic types: Slow oxidizers, balanced oxidizers, and fast oxidizers.
The Slow Oxidizer - slow oxidizers require a higher percentage of carbohydrates that of fat and protien, both to lose weight and to feel both physically and mentally energized.
Balanced Oxidizer - Balanced Oxidizers require an equal percentage of carbohydrates, fat, and protein and have the capacity to do well on the widest range of foods.
Fast Oxidizers - Fast Oxidizers require a higher percentage of protein and fat than of carbohydrates. Fast Oxidizers should have protein in every meal including snacks.

Nutritionist Schools

With the daily grind of work, family, and friends, it seems difficult to make room for an education. If you were like me, I realized my second go-around what i really wanted to become. If you are looking to become a Nutritionist or a Dietitian you may be a perfect candidate for one of the accredited online nutritionist schools. You can find a large number of excellent online nutritionist degree programs in nutrition sciences and public health. Follow your passion with a lifetime of rewarding employment.

Nutritionist Salary

Alot of people ask what the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian and what is the difference in salary. Both require education but a Registered Dietitian requires a bachelor degree from an accredited college approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). This is followed up by a minimum 6 month internship. Next you have to pass a required examination administered by the (CDR) Commission on Dietetic Registration, and keep their credentials updated regularly. The term Nutritionist has been used losely in the United States. A nutritionist is much less specific. An associates or bachelors degree in Public Health, Nutrition Science, Health and Wellness or Healthcare administration are common degrees for becoming a nutritionist. As you can see this effects the salary range in this field drastically. Salaries vary by geographical region, education level, title, and years of practice. Acai: Oprah and Dr. Oz File Suit


Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Oz are taking legal action against more than 50 businesses. The lawsuit includes allegations that companies used the famous duo to advertise and falsely endorse various cosmetics, diet products, and tooth whitening kits.

The papers state: "These defendants are willfully capitalizing on plaintiffs' valuable reputation and intellectual property rights to lure consumers into ordering their infringing products on the false premise that they have been tested or recommended by Ms. Winfrey and/or Dr. Oz when they have not."

The product that caught my attention from the beginning was acai. This has been the new weight loss craze on the Internet. Since I am always looking for new easy ways to lose weight, besides my backbreaking workouts, and eating birdseed, I naturally looked into the acai theory. Look no further people! It is not proven the acai helps you lose weight. It is another “too good to be true” myth! While acai is considered an anti-oxidant, comparable to cranberries, it is not a weight loss tool. Sorry. Argghhhh!!! Back to the basics of working out, good nutrition, and burning more calories then we consume.
